Grand Hotel Renovation

In 1999 and 2000, a major rehabilitation totaling about $20 million dollars was completed to convert the Minneapolis Athletic Club into the 4-star Grand Hotel, the only 4-star hotel presently located in downtown Minneapolis.  Buildings Consulting Group, Inc. was retained by the Owner to serve as the Project Engineer to execute the rehabilitation program for the hotel and renovation of building exterior.

Buildings Consulting Group, Inc. received these two awards on the Project:

    Honor Award for Engineering Excellence” - Minnesota Consulting Engineers’ Council.
    “Seven Wonders of Engineering” Award - Minnesota Society of Professional Engineers

The renovation involved several complex types of rehabilitation, including:

Restoring the brick and terra cotta ornamental facade while preserving the original physical appearance of the facade.

Restoring the exterior fire escape from the top floors to the roof of the Athletic building Low roof to a structurally safe condition.

Infilling the 2-story high racket ball court areas into 2 floors of meeting rooms.

Added supports and floor cutouts for a number of new stairs for the hotel floors.
